The Library
The Library Committee had a very productive year in 2006. We conducted our annual book sale, which generated almost $725 to support our activities. With these funds, 33 new titles have been added to the collection. Subscriptions to six periodicals were continued. Additionally, through donations, 40 titles were also added.
We were able to help rebuild the library collections in two Episcopal churches that suffered destruction by acts of nature. One was Long Beach, Mississippi, which was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. The other was closer to home, St. Luke and St. John, at Caruthersville, Missouri, (in our Diocese), destroyed by a tornado. After the sale, a large number of surplus books were donated to the Columbia Public Library.
It was another unusual year, because once again, the collection grew at about three times its normal rate. While we cannot expect to equal that growth every year, the Library Committee will attempt to increase the value of the collection to the parish by careful selection of new books as they become available in 2007.
Thursday Bible Study
The Thursday bible study meets on Thursdays at 1:30 and is open to anyone who is free at that time. We generally have six to eight people attend. Each semester (we break for the summers) we pick one book in the Bible and read it together in class. This year we read Psalms in the fall and in the winter picked up Romans.
Newcomer/Inquirer Class & Confirmation
At the West Convocation Confirmation service on May 21, 2006, at Grace, Jefferson City, there were present nine members of the two classes (fall 2005 and spring 2006) -- 6 for Confirmation, 2 for Reception into the Episcopal Church (they were previously confirmed in another branch of Christ's church) and 1 for Reaffirmation of Baptismal vows.
Daughters of the King
Daughters of the King is a prayer and service organization for women in the Episcopal Church. A short ceremony was held during church in July of 2006 to charter our chapter, install the new officers (that we recently elected) and then install our new members. Our St. Agatha chapter was chartered with 8 members. We meet monthly on the fourth Thursday of the month at the church. Members recently helped with the Stewardship dinner and are directed in their service as needed at the request of the Rector.
Education for Ministry -
EFM Homepage
Education for Ministry continues strong in its 21st year at Calvary with eight members this fall--four studying the year 1 curriculum (Old Testament) and four studying year 3 (Church History). The group is diverse in age and gender as well as ecumenical, with two members from outside Calvary. The group continues to meet on Thursday evenings for class and continues its shared ministry of serving at the Loaves and Fishes Soup Kitchen the third Sunday of each month.
Calvary Men's Group
We meet every Saturday morning at 11:00 for a one-hour session in Room 101. Attendance has run from a high of 7 to a low of 3.
The purpose of the Calvary Men is to provide a forum, strictly for men, to meet in fellowship and talk about spiritual and personal matters. In 2006 we read
Christianity and the Crisis of Cultures by Joseph Ratzinger, now Pope Benedict XVI. We think about what we are reading, air our views, share our experiences, argue with the author, and find Christian guidance. It is a good place to develop new friends and relationships.
Red Tent Women
The Red Tent Women, a book discussion group for women, will open the tent flaps this fall for another great semester of reading, discussion and fellowship! Our books are:

- October 4: Leaving Church: A Memoir of Faith, by Barbara Brown Taylor
- November 1: The Faith Club: A Muslim, A Christian, A Jew — Three Women Search for Understanding, by Ranya Idliby, Suzanne Oliver and Priscilla Warner
- December 6: A Place of Healing for the Soul: Patmos, by Peter France
We meet the first Thursday of the month at 7 p.m. at the church. Contact Michelle Anderson for more information at
